About Mola Fashion:

Mola is one of the primary expressions of the visual arts in Kuna society. The colourful Molas are a cotton cloth craft made by the Kunas Indians of the San Blas Islands that stretch along the Atlantic coast from Panama to Colombia.

Mola Fashion buys the Molas cloth to use on our unique line of shoes and accessories. Mola shoes are designed for both genders and all group ages. The shoes can be worn during any daily activity from leisure time to business, sports, or fashion.

We firmly believe that we create a one of kind shoe for every individual. There are no two pairs alike. The buyers of the shoe have the possibility to buy their own unique shoe which fits their mood, character or a way to express themselves. These colorful expression Mola shoes can be worn any season of the year.

Mola making is indeed a craft. There must be a trace of uniqueness in design, color or fabrication technique, or a mixture thereof, which permits a qualified observer to detect some originality. Nevertheless, when a Kuna woman makes a Mola she intends to wear, she puts into her work some definite form of individual expression.

To make a Mola, a Kuna seamstress layers rectangles of color cotton cloth basted together. When all the fabric is joined, the Kuna woman prepares her design. Once the design is established on the top layer, the layers of fabric underneath are cut through with small pointed scissors. With each cut pieces of cloth are removed and the colors of lower layers show through. The cut edges are folded under and finished with hidden hand stitches. This method of cut layers of cloth is called reverse appliqué.

The Kuna Indian artists are inspired by everything when determining the design for their Molas. The Mola designs vary from abstracts geometric to plants, flowers and animals, village scenes, to symbols depicting cultural or religious themes.
